30/12: BLUE TIT - COLOURED PENCIL

I've done a little more work on this drawing today but have got bored ... so that's the signal to put it away for a while and do something else.   Still got mixed feelings about using coloured pencils on Pastelmat because the colours really do 'sink' into the soft surface a bit but it certainly helps speed up the process - more smudging, less blending LOL

I decided to crop the picture down a bit and found a dark blue mount which shows just about as much picture as I'd like (I don't have to draw more leaves that way!

  1. I'm always amazed at the progress you make with colored pencil works. This doesn't look as if the color sunk in that much and the blue mat looks good with it.

  2. Thanks Jan
Must admit I'm having problems with the colours of photos on Blogger. Don't think its my monitor as the pics look OK on screen - these seem to have too much contrast/bright colour.
    Never mind ..

  3. No expert on art (but I know what I like) just had to get that in LOL, I really don't know a thing about pencils or paints, but I do like this little bird, he looks cute to me and yes, the frame border is good with it.

    HNY to both of you.

  4. cute :) (does that count as a critique? I never know what I can say or not say when things might be entered into a show)

  5. Ohhh, I love this little guy. You did such a good job with the feathers and the shape of his little body, and the feet, wow! I'd like to know more about the colored pencils on pastel mat. What is that surface like?

  6. Thanks ladies. I'm leaving it to one side till I make up my mind whether to do more work on it or call it finished.

Hi Jennifer. I'm just being overly cautious I guess. The UKCPS brought in a rule a couple of years back stating that entries would be ineligible if:

'Artwork is executed in whole or part under instruction and/or in any teaching or workshop situation'

after a lot of discussion it was decided that if the artist got help/instruction on a forum or blog that would also count as being in a similar situation and we were advised to add that line 'no critique please' just to cover ourselves.

  7. Hi Katherine
I love the pastelmat surface for pastel work.

For coloured pencils I find that the colours sink into the soft surface which enables me to work faster as it is easily smudged with a tissue or cotton bud so less blending required.

the downside (for me) is that its not so easy to get very sharp lines. I tend to use waxy pencils - maybe Polychromos would give a sharper finish but I only have a couple so far so haven't tested them

  8. a lot of places have that rule now, which is why I never post anything I think I might enter in a comp until its done and dusted, just in case since some an be really really strict about what previous people have said about a piece. :)
