23/12: TWAS THE DAY BEFORE CHRISTMAS EVE

and I've got a million things to do before the family descends on us for Christmas Day/Boxing Day .... but I decided to draw instead .... so will have to spend all day tomorrow cooking and getting organised.

This is my first RAF portrait subject ... I will need to do a lot more fine-tuning on the face but wanted to get the uniform done so I can work out how dark I can go with the skintones.

I'm working on bright white Mellotex card but this image has picked up a grey cast ... and at this early stage I won't waste time trying to adjust it

  1. Great start, Sue! In the US, our military usually wear hats for their portraits but this gentleman looks very noble without it. Your portraits are going to be a huge hit.

  2. Thanks Jan.
This Squadron are resurrecting the WWII tradition of portraying the crew at 'leisure' although they are in uniform. I will just be drawing A4 head/shoulders/chest pictures to include the 'wings' and medal ribbons.

  3. This will be quite a challenge Sue, but I am sure you will do these boys proud. This one is looking good already.
    Look forward to seeing more.

Then funding wasn't forthcoming so they have to fund the portraits themselves .. not sure how many there will be now ... but hopefully enough to keep me out of mischief for a while

  5. Nice looking young man and the portrait is coming along well. Pity they won't fund them now. It was such a nice idea.

Merry Merry and all that. Do you serve bread sauce? I am the only person I know that does so.

  6. Merry Merry to you too Jo.
No I don't serve bread sauce, not even traditional chestnut stuffing now as 'the visiting family' aren't very adventurous with food so plain old Paxo Stuffing and cranberry sauce I'm afraid

  7. Funny that, cranberry sauce wasn't heard of in the UK when we emigrated years ago. Bread sauce was more traditional. We don't have cranberry ourselves.
