12/04: RAGDOLL CAT - WIP

Things have been a bit chaotic here today.   We have a team of landscape gardeners renewing fences, digging foundations for retaining flower bed walls etc.  They started work last November but because of the horrible Winter weather haven't been able to complete the work till now - our soil is heavy clay and it has just been too boggy for the guys to work out there.

Anyway, I did make some progress with the cat but not as much as I'd hoped.  I'm enjoying this one and hope that will be reflected in the end result:

  1. Sue this is absolutely stunning. Are you using coloured pencils or pastel pencils?

  2. Thank you Sally - I'm really enjoying this one as I think the cat has a beautiful face :o)

Its pastel pencil on Sennelier Pastel Card and I'm finding that (for me) the Derwent pastel pencils are giving the best results (the Conte and Pitts aren't covering the sanded surface as well). For the eyes I've used Carbothello pastels as the colours are beautifully vibrant. My camera has flattened the colours a bit - there is quite a lot of violet/pink/blue/grey in the darker areas of fur and the ears which doesn't show here.

  3. Watching with great interest as my best friends have two Ragdolls, and I would love to draw them in colour, looking great so far as usual Sue...

  4. Beautiful Sue. Love the fur and wow the eyes . SUPERB. Looking forward to all the updates on this.

Oh thanks too for the ingo on the pastel pencils. I am going to try pastel when i have time to experiment with them. I have Derwent Pastel pencils and a few F.C Pitt pastel pencils. I want to try before I buy too many.

  6. Thanks Dors.
I have lots of soft pastels but find that the pencils suit my style (ability) best - I'm not very good at 'working loose'. As I have lots of velour sheets here I may tackle a larger picture, maybe a big cat, in soft pastels later in the week.

I'm sure you will do brilliantly with pastels as you are a master with graphite and cps :o)
