17/02: PETER PAN HAS HAIR ..... plus freebies

I didn't get any artwork done yesterday as the decorator came to finish/paint the ceiling in our lounge.  So finally, 8 months after our flood damage we're in a position to hang the light/ceiling fan and get back to normal yeaaaay!

We also went to lunch with David's cousin and her hubby and enjoyed a couple of glasses of wine with them - I never drink and draw!

This is today's progress picture - I keep tweaking his skintones and still need to add more fine detail to his features, but his flowing locks kept me busy for hours.   He has dark hair with sunbleached/auburn strands and 'salt & pepper' grey hairs on top of his head so quite a challenge.

Now I've got lots of his hair in place I plan to start on his denim jacket but that won't be till Thursday now as its our usual Wednesday stint as volunteers at Pilgrims Hospice eBay office tomorrow.

I'd read about some white pencils which can be used over smooth surfaces and work well on top of darker coloured pencil layers ... its always a problem adding white over colours, particularly if there is a build up of wax on the paper surface.      So I ordered a pack on Sunday and they arrived today which is pretty good going - free delivery and they came with a little surprise in the envelope - a packet of sweeties ...     I've had a quick 'play' with the pencils and they certainly work better than any other white I've used in the past so 'happy days'

I also received two free biros today - they came with a gift I'd ordered online as a birthday present for a family member ...

Although both gifts were inexpensive items its a nice touch and one that is guaranteed to endear the senders and ensure I'll recommend them in the future

  1. Gorgeous drawing - you're coming right along with it.

I figured out that Biros are our ballpoint pens which are always handy. But what white pencils did you find that go on well over colors? Always interested in anything that will do that!

  2. Hi Jan
They're Staedtler pencils from the Lumocolor range. Be careful when Googling/ordering as some of the Lumocolors are Gel Pens. The pencils are called Lumocolor glasochrom.

  3. hmmm will have to see if I can find some of those pencils to try. and as much as the gel pens are raved about, I just don't know if i can trust them not to really fade when used with cps, so stick to pencils

the hair looks like a big challenge, well done!

  4. Hi Jennifer.
What appealed to me is that these are pencils so would be OK for works exhibited as pure CPs with the UKCPS. Using gel pens would make the work a 'mixed media' piece. They feel very waxy but they give pretty coverage over coloured pencil and they're described as 'permanent' and non-soluble but I haven't tested them with fixative yet to see if that affects the cover.

  5. thats the other reason I wouldn't use the pens, couldn't enter anything cp in most shows if I wanted to try. hopefully the fixative is OK :)

  8. Thank you Hilda. When we were on Fuerteventura Island last month I concentrated on taking photos of smiling people (or those I thought had interesting faces) so I have a few to work on over the next couple of months.

  9. Thanks Sherry - I'll be back on Fuerteventura next week and will see him again so I'll pass on your comments ... see if I can make him blush LOL

  10. Sue, I don't think those pencils are sold in the US or at least not that I can find. Also, I get the impression that they may be like a China Marker/grease pencil? Oh, well, I don't need any more art supplies anyway!

I was also going to comment on how handsome your Peter Pan is then I realized I'm probably old enough to be his mother and he might not appreciate me saying anything! Of course, a good disposition and sunny smile is handsome and sexy on anyone!
